when I when I see you I'm so sorry taking so long but we are I'm about to starve this winter hi good morning Boris I am the night keto Strawberry Fields to deal with everyday life so I wanted share this with you so that way we can learn Excel but we can also look at our Scholars and then we can use it in our own lives weather is it in or an adult we all deal with big emotions we deal with happiness sadness anger frustration and these skills are going ahead and helping us kind of coat which I could deal with them everyday life Siempre la vida so what is coping I were wondering what that is and it says our efforts through our thoughts and actions weird we're going to do some today but the idea is just like our students were trying things out and seeing what works and what doesn't work and if you find something that's fun and then I can also send this out to so you don't have to take pictures of everything so we have some benefits of coping skills like I said it benefits all of us whether we're at shot like a small child in elementary school or an adult when I go to the the durability to deal with stress and to bounce back from adversity the flexibility to learn new skills and adaptive change self confidence and high self-esteem bonding activity having a brighter outlook on life and then also lower levels of stress anxiety and depression so like I mentioned I can't stress this enough right so our Scholars they go through a lot of stress and that's why we teach him this but let's not forget we have stress too and this is how we do go ahead and be grateful to ourselves and forgive ourselves by letting us know like hey everything's going to be fine but we have to go ahead and work through this with some. do a type of coping strategies called browsing and not the grounding we're like you we talked to her say oh you're grounded stay in your room forever it's a little different emotional pain do sometimes distractions work by focusing outward on the external World rather than in Word thinking about all the things that we have to do we're just focusing on what we have and what we can control and also think of it as like distractions censoring we think about having a safe place or what as you can see on the right hand side there are some examples write something as simple as taking a few breaths I know we take all that read every day but there's something different about actually paying attention to your breath and being intentional about going in through the nose and out automatic window and then another one that I want to point out moving your body but also I'll also indulging in care right we are humans and we want to go ahead and make sure that we are taking care of ourselves so for me I might want to go snowboarding or we can go get our nails done counting and coping strategies it can look like thing that you have in your daily life but again it's about focusing and trying your best I can almost I could distract really quickly I want to talk into why do we even think about grounding why is this even considered so when we get really overwhelmed and we still really big emotions we don't want to run away from our feelings we don't want to run away from our emotions but for a little bit it's okay to attach ourselves to remove ourselves so that way we can come back to it with a clear mind so when we think about mindfulness I want to ask a question just a rhetorical question that we think in our line what do we think mindfulness might mean 800% present to be mindful before you do something that is wrong I think those are all really good example so there's a difference between when our mind is full versus mine when do English on the left hand side receive mines alright so we're thinking about our phones were thinking about our  I have to pick up the kids from school I have to cook dinner I there's a lot that we can think of right but we are one person and we want to make sure that yes we have to do all those things we're going through life for all one person we have a lot but again given ourselves disgraced and realizing yes there's tons of things to do but we can't do them if we are you know if we're not in the right spot Michael like like we bought a right being in the moment looking at our surroundings wondering okay what can I control right now I think it's okay sometimes to think about what happened in the past and I think it's okay to sometimes find a head for the future but sometimes when we do that a little too much that's when we can get stretched a little thin so it appears to be a linear pair okay is it masiello so I'm actually kind of sad this but I'll repeat it did you see for ideas so that way we are aware of what's happening right now like I mentioned we can think of like I said you can think about things that happened in the past and we can also plan for the future but the idea is what can one person an example of a coping strategy might be self-soothing Auto auto empanadas this technique will help us why we still really big emotions and we feel like a situation like we can't deal with any more raise your hand if you took life there's been a situation in the past month or you like too much going on I can't do this I said I said and let me just say that is okay right so we have so much going on in the world what can we do to go ahead and focus on. so I have some examples here self soothing things that are going to help us distract ourselves and engage in some of our senses right text me if we take look some of these things are probably like I probably done this before but I never thought it was something that was helping me out so if you're like me when I'm my niece I love to blow bubbles it helps me out and helps her out to focus on one thing another thing chewing gum I don't like them but sometimes I need like a we are paying attention to our five senses and we are making sure that our five senses are taken care of all five of them or maybe one of them oh yeah so the five senses I think we go through life sometimes we experience them we don't think about them on the right now with my piece of candy with my gummy bear tasting but I'm also feeling so so it helps me like kind of focus on one thing I'm going to even say walking our dog so I'm just going to walk the something I have to do but it's like we're getting our being active and we're helping our and I wanted to see if there's any volunteers at my save this is something that I do that's not on here that is like a self-soothing the song so the house really quickly so there's a lot of things they're getting a lot of open strategy sometimes it's really good to get connected with so that's exactly later depending on what we Garden we can eat it later right now is the Sonic have lost movement of mental concentration. our brain on one or two specific things I'm so going back to mine. We have 20 different things or thinking about it I want to try this together so what we're going to go ahead and do I'll do the first ones in Spanish tapas here I want us all to think about a specific food with an unusual texture so now that we're thinking about it with an unusual texture right we all want to use our imaginations later when we're done later when we're done touching it what does it taste like another another example of hyper focusing I want to see we can look around the room I want us to look around the room and seeing a specific color that way we're looking around if we noticed the color I want us to focus on that one color but also think about maybe what are some other things that have that color internet support do things right really small but this is something that sometimes I work with students and we're doing 45 minutes but it's something that we could do when we're really busy or we need like a quick break Cycle Gear so grounded against are going to go back to grounding I'm so grounding us way to remind ourselves and our brains we are where we are and how we're feeling what was it going to do list application I'm so one example of grounding might be a timestamp ejemplos DE so with the timestamp I want us to go ahead and look at the clock and we got to say it out loud but look at the clock and notice what time it is call Italian pie looking at a calendar and notice what day it is so the really cool thing about this it seems so simple but the reason why do this is because again sometimes we have so much on my mind we're thinking about the party that we have to plan in two weeks were thinking about a trout the traveling we have to think about contacting a babysitter so many things let's just see what time it is right now one more example another example of drowning would be hot and cold to be careful with this we want to make sure that not grabbing anything too hot or too cold holding a cup of coffee noticing the warmth in our house or maybe a cold beverage in the morning like an iced coffee Brew noticing how it feels on our skin again it is going back to our senses right angle tension not to what's going on but weird attention to how like the temperature how we're feeling play two videos it's the same video One in English and one in Spanish English Espanol this is going to be English and I'll pay the Spanish 54321 method create awareness look for things you can touch and I'm going to go ahead and say it in Spanish Samantha Coronavirus no. Nina Coronavirus so with the 54321 method I like to slow it down a little bit when I'm with students but this is probably one of my favorite things to do when is student comes into my office and they're really big emotions and they're thinking about so many different things I want them to focus on what's going on with them right in. so I'd like I said they can be thinking about what happened in the past what they want to do in the future they can think about how angry or sad they are they want to that's okay but what I wanted to do is let's go ahead and focus on our five senses so what we're going to do what we're going to do if we pass out some paper and I actually want to try this today so you can see what sometimes what the kids are doing but also you can use this for yourself so what we're going to do we're going to take the next month they might will take the next 5 minutes write down five things that they can see what he'll think of course have to satisfy his 10th 3 things that they think year and then one thing that you can place it's time to do the stanky leg ballistic 5 minutes 4 days if possible do one more minute Heroes economy maybe get everybody to try so I was wondering if I can have one you don't have to have everybody say everything or maybe let's see if we can have a volunteer share five things that they could see right now I got a three things that we can I hear a lot of noise stop the music all right thank you so much for trying that out. Everything is going to work for us ideas that we try things out and maybe it's a little weird but we see if it works and we can continue to practice let's go get that is so cool sometimes I like to do this in class but I just think about this you ever seen. That works for them there's nothing personal but give it a try I'm sorry this last night and then I'll try to upgrade so how does this help these skills are still that every child teen and adult can benefit from they can support us in our daily lives as adults we can teach it to Scholars and then we could also do these strategies with them and then lastly it helps us be patient with our kids and like what they're going through but it can also be patient and ourselves breaks because we are going through things just like I remember my name we're just giving ourselves time is the that we spent together I love that because we're not only telling them I had three kids what is tickling because you try things out sometimes people reactive for me personally when something big happens sometimes I don't know what to say in the moment I need to take time to think about it and then come back in a moment to answer and figure things out right now but again everybody's different so I can try to figure out what what my husband is in my time she said I do everything I found I am I nothing but what can I do when when you're when you're older guy I think also there's more communication skills so sometimes when it is highly elevated and something might not work I asked him straight up what do you think I can do for you right now sometimes I'll give them three options sometimes I give them three options cuz again maybe they're so stressed or something's going on so much that they asking them what they want that's too much so I guess I'll give them three. So the three options that I like to give so I say student would you like to talk things out with me would you like me to give you space so get that is 5 minutes or maybe they don't want to talk about anything they want to destroy would you like a distraction I'll give them like a fidget or we'll play a game together and they'll naturally kind of come to you getting that options but and sometimes will come your way but again. la la la la la la whenever you wanted under the table what is the remote and then I think that stuff too because everybody is Sprint by again from everybody's different. this might be an idea may be setting a timer and setting all right once or 15 minutes are done we'll see if we can I'm back together a little bit more level-headed and talk about what's going on when there is multiple people when there are multiple and we're trying to figure something out and talk I'll be on there's not going to be a lot of solving there because we're going to say things we don't mean we're going to ask the certain way so let's give everybody stay 15 minutes right but everybody's different right Play Store Melissa McCarthy listen and understanding set the time for the student that already gives him the space. oh wow I feel a little bit more comfortable because they didn't decide what was my counselor didn't decide for me my teacher didn't bring my parents didn't they gave me an option to choose in a way we're still controlling a little bit by say three option for not telling them hey you have to do all these things we're still controlling it a little bit while saying three option but it still gives them the autonomy of the choice to feel like okay part of this conversation and I'm going to choose what is best for me so not all the time but I feel like most of the time when they get to choose they feel way more comfortable okay so I want to thank you so much I get out the run this application I'd like to try something new are going to things that we want to give ourselves a few so I actually want to give you all the round of applause thank you for coming and also again just trying some is it didn't work if you think that'll work for you like there's different ways that we can kind of research but I just wanted to give you some examples of things that guy thank you so much Peter Morris
