Mr. Carlstone shares simple tips on how to support your scholar(s) from home to help them improve their reading levels.Scholars who read independently have greater reading comprehension, verbal fluency and general knowledge than those who do not. They benefit by becoming better readers, score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas, and have greater content knowledge than their non-reading peers.

yes. All right thank you so much again for being here thank you so much for making the time we're going to try to get into the material for introductions I believe I started this call Tony R Carlton I'm one of the assistant principals here at Alliance Bellaire Middle Academy and this is Miss two of us and Michelle borrow two of our parent coordinator I just sent piscina two big things we want to make sure that you have a picture of where your student is at right now as a reader and to give you tools to work on those things at home getting College ready and reading our mission here at Alliance College Preparatory School in to make sure that students are I need to get into and be successful in college and if you were invited to today's meeting it's because while we already working partnership we may need some extra help from you to make sure that your student is ready I'm going to be really specific when we took the test in December the mid-year test your student was going to or 4 years below grade level dulce de leche you can find specific information about your child on your report that we gave you and many of the people who are here via online we sent it to your email so you can look for an email from me Pakistan we weren't able to send it out to everybody but we were able to send it out to most people if you're missing it please put a note in the chat so I can make sure I send it to you what about your child and a document about how to read that with college in mind the one of the things that you should be able to right away is that you should have three different rectangles on your document of presuming that the student was able to finish all the testing time yes I'll take three of these tests each year at the beginning of the year and the great majority of our students improve significantly 80% of 75% and 70% of our Freighters all improved significantly I think it's a very good thing but this is an Uncle Tom and what that means is our goal isn't just to make sure that your student is on grade level our job is to make sure that your student when they apply for colleges is performing better than the other students. now you might be wondering how I know whether my student is performing worse than as good as or better than other students portal that information is on the report tile so what percentile indicates how you're doing compared to other people of the same age comparing you against kids the same age in the same Gray if I was scoring in the 85th percentile on my reading test that would mean that my score is better than 85% of other students but worse than 15% of students Edison's number for Toshiba Singapore Santo better than 30% of the students but 70 none of the students are scoring better than them you might be wondering why that percentile is so important you a lot about what's possible for college are enough spaces for all the students who want to go to college take whatever you can be relatively successful at mid-level universities what is Lexi Sun Cal State Los Angeles Fresno State xcetera Express no problem you can be relatively sure your student will get into and be successful at some higher-level universities and may also get free money via scholarships information about 100,000 students apply to get in but only 10,000 receive admittance that's a nice , UCLA or California the only one out of 10 and so that's why it's important to know what your percentile is your students current percentile is low located here on the report look to see where that is now if you would like just so you know on these reports if the percentile is below the 25th percentile they don't tell you what it is they just tell you that it's below the tour pns Airport so if you're here it's because we are worried that we may need more help from you to make sure that you're stupid on grade level by the end of eighth grade that's our goal the weather condescending for college at the very beginning of their senior year so they have to be ready by the end of their junior year and if we want them to be ready for college or competitive for college at the end of their junior year they should be on grade level by the end of their 8th grade year can I get that if you're here or if you are invited we may need your help and within the students may need more time to read you may have already had two older students you may know how to get into college but there's three primary things that impact if a student get admitted and the courses they take in find some idea to problem across really America and I don't know about the world the definitely America and we want our students to be successful but just to give you a clearer picture of how students come in 50% of our 6th and 7th grade are more than two years behind where how do you set to 50% of the students when they join us in the sixth grade class b e r close to grade level or above and 50% are two years below or more what do real quickly how do students get better rhyming words sentences and paragraphs that go through your eyes through your ears and that your brain tries to make and you might be wondering what my suit constantly texting with their friends why aren't they getting better at reading for 11 year olds or other 12 year old I'm not exposed to complex sentences or higher level vocabulary how can we improve how much the students read without driving ourselves crazy what are some easy ways to do that and we're going to go over three relatively easy way alright one way to remember that maybe this only works for English I don't know ABC easy as 1 2 3 they said do all three of these things add caption subtitles to everything they watch we have to stop. we have a program called Learning Ally that the student can use at home for about 30 or 40 minutes A Night Freddy license is another easy tool for parents I already talked to everything that they watch if it's an English have the English subtitle if it's in Spanish have the English subtitles on if it's in Japanese to English subtitles on Apple TV allargando easier if the student doesn't have as much on their phone and instead they have to use like the Central Family TV you going to send it all right number to we do want the students to read for between 30 and 40 minutes and night but we know but sometimes reading is not the most exciting thing Dubai Coronavirus is a program that students can use on their computers and it allows them to see the book read the book and hear the book at the same time from the bookstore like I said earlier students improve at reading by hearing the words and sentences and paragraphs and reading the words through their eyes and senses a ago Learning Ally allows you to do both some of the parents talk about how their students don't don't like reading for a lot of our students they got stuck pronouncing the words do they get stuff they get stuck with reading they get stuck pronouncing the words slow painful process have to worry about that because it's being pronounced the person who's reading it spell again. They just have to follow along all right if technology is not your thing I totally understand if you prefer not to use a program like learning ally I understand that it's totally great to have a student work one-on-one with someone else and they can take turns reading to each other about every 5 to 6 minutes do that that's a great plan but if you don't learn it why is there already is not individual books is lessons where students read and then answer questions in the software, already when you take the diagnostic so this is this is showing you your student score they decide what lessons the student gets based on that score $1 so if your student has certain challenges they will be providing lessons directed at where your student is sometimes it's really difficult as a parent to know whether or not your suit was actually reading but if a student doesn't i-Ready lesson weather that I Boston is in reading or in math the student and the parent can look right after and see if they pass the lesson I don't know no I was trying or paying attention all right all right so just a review caption subtitles in English for all the video things Netflix Hulu TV all of it independent reading with learning ally a person for 40 minutes or more per day on Election Day already. now is a great time we've gone over the three things that you can do at home now is a great time to pause they go to clever.com they they do know about their score the schedule for summer school schedule for summer school so yeah the schedule goes from 8:30 to ride around 2 3012 45 wait to the same powers of school from 8 to 3 I'm so depressed set an appointment you got the boys. you might have been wondering why didn't we just say get some books and give them to your kid not all students will grow from just having a book and reading some students struggle with decoding phonics fluency and reading is a very painful process because of that it's low and it's boring for those boots students there's a reason I put reading an air quotes some students think they are reading but all they're doing is making sound they're just sounding out the words real reading means that you're sounding out the words and making meaning from them thinking about them you say oh did you do your reading in United States yes what did you think about what the author said and they're like I don't know and you like what do you mean you don't know you just read it now like I don't get it I will not allow a student to be stuck on the decoding of fluency because the program is read out loud for the books in the library it shouldn't be boring like TV shows and they like Cheesman let them practice that will help them to grow but just giving them a book may not work if not that I don't have it serious conversation with your child about why they are not a good reader or why they are not trying in class or yell or blame and the truth is they might be trying in class everyday if my student has a fourth grade reading level or a third grade reading level why do they have a B in the class Italian Olive El Dorado and that's because grades in classes are a reflection of many things how organized are they did they complete all the work did they make changes based on the feedback of a student worker really hard does all the work makes the changes they could have a b but still be reading below where they should and like we talked about before not to do don't just tell your child to read more you probably already probably did not create the result that you want besides the three things we talked about before we had talked about three new thing Karen's have reported the following as helping to get their students to read more need help finding the books that are interesting to them once per week to try to help them find that will make a big difference we're going to talk about reducing screen time on phones and TVs Etc sizing some items to be done before they can just use screens you could take them to the library once a week looking through the books that are available also help you find interesting books like them Justin says I don't want to go to the library you can go to the library find some books that are similar to the TV shows and movies that they like get help from the librarian and bring those books home our teachers have been fighting same fight if you want to call. If they've been they've been seeking to find interesting books for your students as well throughout the year and they may know something that your student likes this year getting rid of all the screen it just means being intentional about when the screens are on and reducing them to its to make time for more healthy activity did it hello set the time on our families and our schools and our communities. text is that our students spend hours and hours and hours on screens cuz that's what they did for about a year-and-a-half so Jen we do not recommend complete we eliminated them because the students might just become really angry or guidelines for a reduce acne LG usage schedule during the summer to 24 hours a day 12 hours a day and that includes time on Telephone time playing video games time playing or watching TV movies excetera. just not being able to do those things make students find other things to do and they will complain about being bored a lot I'm bored it but being bored is not a bad are more likely to read for fun because of that are also good for the student weather that's going outside going for a walk playing sports or playing games that actually involved person-to-person contact person to person, station and the last one is prioritizing activities before screen some families allow students to take out the screen after the child has completed certain chores I noticed when I see it sounds like a lot of what I was but I'm sure that a lot of students treatment be there more than that so bad she said seventh grade so if we want our students to be able to get into and be successful in college we met her take a different approach than what we're doing now in this may look different from one family to another family it takes time and it takes remaining hopeful to find a way that will work for you and for your student but our goal is to make sure that they get into and graduate from college and we have to remember that it's not just about getting the grade-level because college is a competition and we need our students to be able to outperform the other students so going back to those three things all three things will help an improvement and you shouldn't be worried that you shouldn't feel bad about that and during the school year my personal goal is for all the 8th graders to get to be on grade level before they leave overhead made things tougher but we're going to keep trying just letting us know if this is or isn't something that you can make happen at home spearmint with but as you probably know sometimes your students will do things for a coach or for a teacher that they won't do for you try setting this up and no matter what you try or if your family circumstances just keep you from being able to do these things let us know and we're going to work with our staff and we're going to work with all stars to try to make sure that we have more than a couple days after school where students can sit and do these things quite where they will have time to do on i-Ready lesson to read silently with learning ally we won't be doing the captions and videos we won't be doing that you'll have to do that at home but the reading in the i-Ready we can do that at school and in fact we do already do these are at school but some of our students need more time with it so that brings us to the presentation again right now I can answer questions and let us know if you have any like particular questions about your student or if you have any I would like to ask that you think the answers would be helpful to the whole group after school program has done DNA testing you play Bon Iver. just want to let you know that if you could but if you know you already cannot provide the spacer your family circumstances not allow you to provide this face and this opportunity that you enjoy your students into the program for after-school not only for the summer but for the fall because we do have spaces that limited we have only 100 spaces on so we will be able to prove how do students of space to do this and maybe it's a compromise where you tell your students to enroll to get to the academic portion and to get to stay after school for sports arts and crafts whatever else that we have to offer but I do highly recommend that if you know that you're interested apply already because we do have very very limited Faith they just for the support and then we fill out a contract that you need Kimberly that you're only staying for this portion and then they can get on the poorest open until what are the scores at the important so just to clarify grave grave don't tell the whole story they tell a lot of things hard to tell what is most responsible for the a organized and thorough and make chain is based on
