Hard Lockdown Drill for OSSS Students/Staff

What
Hard Lockdown Drill for OSSS Students/Staff
When
5/19/2021, 11:50 AM 12:00 PM

Hello MIT Staff,

On Wednesday, May 19, we will conduct a Hard Lockdown Drill. You will find instructions down below. Please be prepared to start the hard lockdown at approximately 11:50AM. You will hear an announcement through our PA system signaling a hard lockdown.

Lockdown

The purpose of a Lockdown signal is to provide the Incident Commander with a means for alerting staff and students that there is an emergency situation in the school and that for a period of time, movement in the school will be restricted.

Lockdown – Hard (No Response)

Is used when:

1.     Incident Commander feels that it’s necessary, or;

2.     there is an active threat in/at the school, or;

3.     there are shots being fired, or;

4.     there is an active threat outside the school, or;

5.     there is a hostage situation

These situations pose the greatest threat to students and staff and require that NO ONE MOVES IN THE SCHOOL.  The School Emergency Response Team is NOT activated.  Staff not supervising children remain where they are and lock themselves in their office/common space. These staff members will email and/or GroupMe Ops to inform their location. Personnel available in the main office (Command Post) will be utilized to stabilize the situation until the police arrive on the scene and assess the situation.

Staff with Students: Close and lock classroom/office doors, turn off lights, and drop down to the floor. PE Teachers: If a lockdown is ever declared during PE time and your class is outside, you will need to report to the MPR immediately. Teachers/staff should make a list of all children not accounted for, add to this list the name of any child or adult that enters the classroom after the HARD LOCKDOWN is declared. Move the children away from windows (if possible) and have everyone sit on the floor by their desk to keep students 6 ft. apart from one another. All room occupants should be huddled or spread out in a way that conceals their presence the best. They remain in this position until directed to do otherwise.  Please note: you can use the Emergency Response Protocol Poster posted by your door to cover the glass window on your door.

While in position, please pull your emergency attendance rosters/forms from your red binder (located in red backpack) and complete all attendance forms that you typically complete for all other drills. Ops members will stop by your classroom to collect them (after the lockdown is over). Staff with students, if you are interested in reviewing this Student Lockdown Training with your students, you may do so before the drill. Please note that we are doing a HARD LOCKDOWN, as you review this training deck with students.

Students who are not under the direct supervision of an adult when the HARD LOCKDOWN signal is given, will find the nearest adult and follow their directions.

Any visitors to the school will remain where they are, assuming they are either in a classroom or in an office. If not in either location, they should go to the nearest office/classroom and follow the staff member/teacher’s instructions.

Teachers/other staff members should not open the door to their classroom/office space/common area under ANY circumstances until directed by the administrator or law enforcement.

As soon as the lockdown drill is over, we will do a PA announcement calling an all clear. Once you hear that announcement, you may continue with your regular school day.
