espanol you can start again welcome to all of our parents thank you so much for joining us today this is our parents special education Workshop we really appreciate those of you who logged on to learn more about our special services at Alliance MIT we have a ton of really great detailed information to share with you all today and I just wanted to name up front that we welcome parents both of students that have disabilities or have IEPs but also those that don't and just would like to learn more about special education so whatever your background is or whatever your connection to special education is so glad that you're here and we are looking forward to sharing a lot of great information with you today and for those of you that I haven't had the pleasure of meeting my name is Dean I'm the special education director here at the will so I support both the middle school and high school size of the complex so the goal of today's Workshop is for parents to develop a stronger understanding of the special process and the special education program at Alliance MIT we're also going to be discussing our upcoming District validation review stop. information questions will leave them at the end it's so weird to start off with an overview of the special education process for some of you this might be review you're a little bit familiar with it is this is going to be something totally brand-new I'm so all again are welcome here special education is an individualized combination of instruction it says and supports provided to students with disabilities and we're really through special education we are trying to eliminate barriers to learning to help our students with disabilities DEA actually not guaranteed and education Transformers our school systems and the way that we until inclusive they are of different students goals of special education access and Independence access means that we want our students with disabilities to have the opportunity to learn so that means we work to remove those barriers to learning through services accommodations I really want to emphasize here today is independence sometimes too much service for a child can actually be a disservice when we elderserve students and when we don't develop a plan to save those supports away as they gain Mastery in a say I'm get older we it can result in in Wisconsin learned helplessness we're actually teaching them to rely on that support and preventing them from learning how to do things on their own I'm sure all of our parents know our goal for our graduates of is to go on to college or to go into their careers equipped with the academic social and Vocational skills necessary to be independent adults and if we provide to supports for students and we never let them struggle ultimately robbing them of that opportunity so we want to provide our students with with IEPs and I provide all of our students the support that they need to be successful but we also want to make sure that we're slowly fading that support away as we teach the students a skills they need to be in the really just wanted to highlight that because they he will come back as we discussed our special education model schools are also required to have a process for identifying students with disabilities who may not currently be identified or may not be diagnosed with a disability is actually up to the school to identify those students that process is something called child find students are also required to attempt and document interventions prior to assessing students for special education services and this is so that we're not over qualifying students with disabilities who actually might just need on some additional supports in the classroom at our school the Student Success team or SST serves as both the child find process and r referral intervention the Student Success team process is intended for any students who are struggling academically behaviorally or social emotional learning the team which consists of a parent parents typically the student teachers administrators counselors review the student strengthen knees Nation to provide once a student is suspected of having a disability and after pre referral intervention is individualized based on the areas of concern but typically these assessments will incur General ability academics motor ability language and speech skills and social emotional status again they're highly individualized but usually we assassin all of those cats what's the assessments are complete the school organizes a meeting to present the findings to the team and this is what's called an initial IEP and it's alive these are required to be held within the within 60 days of the signed assessment plan so the parent agrees to assessment the school has 60 days to complete the assessment and present the findings covid-19 closures as many of you know actually did pause this process temporarily so we weren't the holes into the 60-day timeline because of the closure during them the team determines if the student is eligible for special education services in order to be eligible the student have to meet certain criteria it's not just deciding if the student needs extra I have to meet certain criteria to be classified under different disability categories if the team decides that they are eligible the team agrees on what's called a free and appropriate public education you might hear that called steep for the student which will be the plan for how the school will support the students and will work with the parents and the rest of the team one solid that is decided as an initial IEP we haven't called annual IEP so every single year the team needs to review the students progress establish new goals the IEP that we see fit IEPs are required to be held at least once a year but parents can request on the IEP to be held earlier than the due date if changes are needed to be made and then every three years we have what's called a triennial IEP where the student is re-evaluated to determine if they continue to qualify for special education services start the assessment process all over again on for the triennial eighties and go through the process again in special education you hear a lot of acronyms. turn around but probably the most common one I've caught myself saying it a few times is IEP IEP stands for individualized Education plan very literally the IEP is a legal document that lays out the program of instruction supports and services that students need to make progress and thrive in school iep's are really designed to meet the stew Nick me that's why they're called individualized plans the IEP team is the group that works together to make the plan and I he meeting is the meeting in which the IEP informal meetings are informal conversation actually don't change it when we have to have an IEP meeting it's important really important to consider what's in an IEP the first and foremost most important part of what is included is parent input parents are absolutely invaluable parts of the IEP team so we really can't develop a plan to support students without your input and support from there we also have what are called present levels of performance which includes needs and how their impact their disability impacts them in different areas this also includes the English language development not yet rated natural areas of gross for on to reclassify you also find goals in life Sanders daiichi also contains the offer of free and appropriate public education or faith in this includes the classes the curriculum the accommodations and modifications and the services that the student will be receiving and then lastly for students who are 14 years or older we have what's called and transition plan on this will describe your child's education career and independent living goals and their their progress towards graduation especially is absolutely essential to have the students present and involved in the meeting sometimes that might be different from those of the student but when the student is 18 it's really completely up to what do you also what he written IAP translate that into a motor skill and write it down on Simpsons really struggle with that or sensory processing which means their ability to manage all that might experience in the classroom loud noises are Brighton Place or people sitting very close to them some students have difficulty processing all of that and so Occupational Therapy Services can also support with a dressing we also offer a. e-services which is physical education that's adapted or modified we offer counseling services to address any social emotional barriers that students made pasta learning and related to this is because what they called Eric's counseling with stands for educationally related intensive counseling services and this is more appropriate for students who really need more intensive social emotional support we have Behavior development and implementation which provides students with direct Behavior Support in the classroom I'm in the last CD have deaf and hard of hearing services on Winchester call Mom Pacific School so at our school the mission for special education program is a state and I'll go ahead and just read this cuz it's really really important to me and Billy how's the work that we do is a school supporting our students with disabilities the special education program at Alliance MIT a team consisting of fierce the kissed for Scholars unique knees will provide rigorous student-driven individualized instruction and educational services for students with disabilities in order for all Scholars to have access to an exceptional education and fulfill the alliance in Michigan we could what we do you know when we talk about special education services at 11 call booba how much is a I am I mean what is this song we have at least students with disabilities curriculum in the general education next we have intervention it means that these classes are taught by general education instruction in the general education setting the intervention class is just more as an elective in like I said students with m keys to be part of this class I'm at Saint Anna can students are still on the general education curriculum but it's important enough that the intervention class on because it is a remedial class might be addressing lower level skills that are not part of the curriculum again their core classes for English Core math core science are in general education with a general education curriculum we also are very proud of our College and Career Readiness Center or CCRC program this is really for students with academic needs that cannot easily our address in the general education setting so for this D students their primary Math Science and History instruction is in the general education setting but with increased support from an RSP teacher Oran IA as a co-teacher however it's important to note that their primary English instruction is taught by a special education teacher in much smaller actually replaces their grade level core English class they also might be receiving additional pull out support for phonics development learn how to sound out and decode and read words more fluently these students are on a general education curriculum but it's slowed down there's a lot of different scaffold and support reduced in as needed so what I mean by that is if in a regular English class take hover 10 reading standards and I'm writing standards and CCRC they may just focus on the most important 5 reading standards or 5 writing standards they're not necessarily covering all of the standards even though the standards they are why are general education grade level standard and then lastly we have our pilot program or Aces or alternative curriculum for exceptional Scholars program this is for students who have academic needs that are so significant that they cannot access general education standards without significant modification going back to that accommodations does modifications to remember modifications actually change the rigor of the standard some cells so that means they're actually on an alternative curriculum that Taylor's their specific and individual highest academic level we also are proud to have the only moderate to severe education specialist in Alliance which means that are are Asus teacher and is actually a trained and equipped with the Knowledge and Skills to support students with these more intensive needs they receive their these students received their primary instruction for ELA literacy in transition math in a special education setting again on modified standards but they receive science enrichment PE and advisory in the general education setting with the support of an instructional aide piece of this program that we're really really proud of is still offering them that inclusive environment where they can still be with and learn alongside their peers are but without additional support modifications all right I'm so that is sort of an overview like I said of our present at the question and answer you all know.
